How does our reality get shaped by the words we hear, speak or believe in ? : Sound messages, including Songs

Your words create your reality!

As cliche as it sounds, it does have a ring of truth around it.

There is a reason, why affirmations are so popular, not just in today’s era, but since ages. A person creates his or her own reality by using this powerful tool called “words”.

The concept of curses was and is taken quite seriously, especially here in India. People believe that words uttered with such strong beliefs and emotions, definitely hold powers. I don’t know how many of us believe it today. However, it is not entirely wrong.

Even psychologists believe it, to some extent.

A small example, would be : what do you think would happen to a child, who was never affirmed by his or her parents growing up?

What happens to the child’s self esteem, happiness, confidence, etc. ?

Not just parents, criticism from anyone or in any form affects us bad, doesn’t it?

That child grows up in a reality, deprived of love, happiness or any other sort of positive experiences , that are so meant for that child.

Reality is quite a subjective concept, two people living in the exact same situation, with exact same circumstances and privileges or problems, will/can perceive two very different realities. It is based on one’s perspectives, beliefs, core values, and lot other factors.  Thus, it becomes evident that, it is not so hard to change your reality, today and right now.

In a research, it was found that the core beliefs or unconscious beliefs that one might have picked up without even being aware, have a huge impact on what kind of life that person lives. Not just mentally, but it is manifested in physical reality as well. Your subconscious mind finds more and more similar things in your surroundings, to prove to you that what you believe in,  is totally correct.

To explain it in a simpler way : Let’s take an example of advertisements. We watch hundreds of ads, per day or week. We hardly pay attention to some or all. However, those messages, even if you haven’t consciously paid attention to, get stored in your mind, and strengthens over time. And when you are out shopping, you most probably will pick products you have subconsciously registered in your mind, than any other.

These are called subliminal messages.

Our mind is that impressionable!

And yet in Today’s time, people hardly care what they speak or tell someone else, be it angrily, jokingly or for any other reason. They hardly care what type of content they are watching, listening or creating. They hardly care for any subliminal or normal messages that they pick up throughout the day, by not being present or by being constantly busy with unnecessary things.

Today I’m focusing on messages we receive in the form of sound. They are as strong as visual cues. The type of songs, podcasts, frequencies, conversation we listen to, affects us in ways that we might never be able to become aware of. What we tell ourselves and even what we let others tell us, what we hear consciously or absent mindedly, anything and everything affects your reality.

I have observed that negative (or dark) references, jokes, stories, podcasts or songs, etc catch our attention faster than any positive ones. It has somehow become “cool” to be that way.

Even Youtubers based on their stats, believe that dark content is what the public is shifting towards. And I wonder why? Why do we want to create such a reality and where is the root of it all?

I will try to explain this point in a bit detail by using an example :

People love to use phrases like, “ Oh, I’m so broke, like always”, “I always fail, it’s a wonder how I passed this subject”, “I hate this/that/him/her, etc”, “I always end up being hurt”, etc. It’s become cool to brush all these things off, as something very normal.

By normal, I mean accepting these fates rather than working to get better.

(Sometimes living in a certain way for so long, makes it natural to talk like this and it is not entirely wrong – but one must know the clear difference between releasing or expressing negative realities, feelings or situations & actually being negative for no reason or believing in such things wholeheartedly. I feel even if it does nothing good to stay positive – it sometimes gives us just the hope, we needed to get through it all.)

Sometimes, I feel people use them to fit in. For example, it is easier to say, “I don’t know how I passed”, when all your friends expected you to fail with them, or to say, “I always end up hurting”, than to find your own patterns and improve.

Another reason could be fear, fear of change or being taken advantage of.

For example, it is easier to say I’m broke, than to be seen in any other way or treating your entire office, without the excuse of being broke. (I hereby, do not mean to demean anyone! I agree sometimes or most times it is not an excuse, it’s a valid reason)

Or the fear that something bad will happen by sharing or accepting, good and happy situations, etc.

Then again, that stems from not having clear boundaries, or having unnecessary limiting beliefs. It is all again, rooted in lack of awareness, lack of being mindfully present and most importantly lack of inner work!

Your reality shifts when you figure out the root causes of your problems, which are taken up by your subconscious, and are stuck there as rigid beliefs.

Let’s focus on how to do inner work, in another blog. And dedicate this one to changing your reality by words, that you speak, that you let others speak to you or about you, that you choose to consume in the form of any type of content, on a daily basis.

Affirmations are a set of words, which affirm or reinstate something. It can be negative as well as positive.

I have tried to convey how such negative words are already creating your existing reality, based on people you interact with, your own mind’s chatter, along with many other types of content out there : Special mention to TV News.

So, let’s talk about positive affirmations. Needless to say, this is also a part of working on yourself, your beliefs and your reality.

” If you can believe in something wholeheartedly, without an ounce of doubt – I can assure you, your subconscious, the universe, god or energy, whatever you choose to call it – starts working on your behalf, to prove to you and show you evidences, that what you believe, is infact true. “

And therefore, almost every spiritual practice involves affirmations. They can be said out loud or in your mind – at any point of time, to quickly bring you back, to where you desire to be.

Using affirmations once a day, is not enough, we need to constantly be aware of our words.

Reciting affirmations once or twice a day for 5, 10 or 20 minutes is not enough, though it is a good start to begin your healing journey.

I say it is not enough, because you might nullify that practice by your daily habits. If you are starting fresh, your daily habits such as – saying bad things about yourself, hating yourself and others, using songs with references to unwanted realities, etc will continue to exist. And your belief system, strengthened over years, will simply not change with 5 minutes of new content.

It will need practice, patience and a strong will.

For example: If I affirm myself for 5 minutes every morning that “I am Wealthy or Am a money magnet”, and go on with my day, telling or complaining to others how broke I am, or listening to a podcast on how people are constantly losing money and becoming bankrupt, etc – It will simply bring me back to where I started.

5 minutes of practice versus 12 hours of negative affirmations, which do you think your mind will believe to be true?

I remember, how whenever I got depressed, sad or heartbroken, I found comfort in sad songs. And I know I’m not alone. Now I am not saying, do not listen to any sad song ever, they are beautifully created and we resonate with them and the artist forming a beautiful connection & medium to acknowledge our feelings. However, you need to be mindful of whether it is an all time thing or a healthy way of enjoying a certain type of music.

Yes, not just the lyrics but also the type of music you hear influences you.

Frequency of the type of music you hear is quite important. You might be aware, how soothing music for guided meditations or for bathtimes, which is available on different platforms, has a completely different effect on you than let’s say Rock music.

It’s not to say that one is better than the other, but choose the type depending on the reality you wanna create.

I would also like to add that we are here to experience everything there is, therefore, I wouldn’t stop you from indulging in such music, podcasts, news, etc, which has a tilt to slight negative emotions , altogether. However, I will urge you to be aware and mindful! Therefore, you should be very mindful of the things you say, hear or listen to – consciously or unconsciously.

This was an introduction to how our reality gets shaped by the words we hear, speak or believe in.

On an ending note, I would give you a few out of many alternatives available, to listen to instead of those songs, which created the reality you live in right now. ( Unless, you are exactly where you want to be – in that case, continue to do what you are doing! )
